Van Oord has been awarded the contract to perform maintenance dredging in the port of Beira, Mozambique. The customer is CFM (Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique). The contract value amounts to some EUR 37 million. The work has begun in April 2010 and will take approximately eighteen months to complete. A portion of the project costs are being covered by the Dutch government.

The work involves dredging the port of Beira. A total of 8 million cubic metres of sand and clay will be dredged. Some of the sand will be used for land reclamation for a coal terminal. Van Oord will deploy amongst others two medium-sized trailing suction hopper dredgers. In corporation with Van Oord’s subsidiary Wicks the new site will be prepared for further development by using vertical drains.
