A top congressional leader visited Green Bay today and pledged his support for continued funding of dredging in the Port of Green Bay.

U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar, D-Minn., chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, met with Brown County officials and with U.S. Rep. Steve Kagen, D-Appleton, who represents the area.

Kagen said the visit was prompted partly by last year’s federal order to halt dredging temporarily because of concerns that it conflicted with an environmental cleanup in the Fox River. The work to maintain Green Bay’s shipping channel costs the federal government about $3 million a year.

Noting that competition for such funding is heated, Kagen said he was pleased to have Oberstar’s support for Green Bay.

“The chairman is keenly interested in helping us,” he said.
