On 6 May, the Sand Motor information centre will be opening in The Hague. Visitors can learn everything about the construction and effect of the Sand Motor, as well as ‘building with nature’.

The information centre

The information centre covers topics including innovation, marine engineering, research, safety, nature and recreation. Films, a virtual model and photos will allow visitors to enter the world of the Sand Motor. An assistant will be present to answer questions and to provide explanations. From the roof terrace, visitors will have a good view of the coastline and the work being carried out by Van Oord and Boskalis .

Location

The information centre is located on the site of the Delfland Water Board [Hoogheemraadschap van Delfland] at Hoek van Hollandlaan 15 in The Hague (Kijkduin district). The route is signposted from the Kijkduin boulevard. The www.dezandmotor.nl website contains up-to-date information and directions to the information centre.

Sand Motor

The Sand Motor consists of 21.5 million m3 of sand that will be deposited in the form of a hook-shaped peninsula at Ter Heijde. Wind, waves and currents will spread the sand gradually along the coast of Zuid-Holland province. This principle of ‘building with nature’ will ensure that the coast will be replenished by natural means. In this way, the Sand Motor will contribute to coastal protection while providing more space for nature and recreation. This is the first time that the Sand Motor concept is being implemented.
