APM Terminals was named winner of the 2011 Lloyd’s List Global Safety Award evening at the prestigious annual industry Awards Gala held in London. The award was presented in recognition of APM Terminals’ “ exceptional commitment to improving safety standards ”, and was accepted by APM Terminals CEO Kim Fejfer.
“ I am very proud to accept this very gratifying recognition of the continued efforts our company and colleagues have made over the past year in eliminating risk and improving safety performance in the cargo handling and logistics field throughout the APM Terminals Global Port, Terminal and Inland Services Network ” said Mr. Fejfer.
In 2010, APM Terminals’ continued to make significant gains in safety performance with a 25% improvement in Lost-Time Injury Frequency (LTIF) as the combined Port, Terminal and Inland Services’ LTIF rate dropped by 26% from 5.82 in 2009 to 4.35 per million man-hours worked in 2010. Many of the company’s individual facilities within the portfolio achieved at least a 100 day LTI-Free over the past twelve months.
APM Terminals’ fourth annual Global Safety Day program for 2010 introduced a new scale and scope for the company-wide event, and included the active participation of approximately 150,000 people in 63 countries. This participation rate elevated the program into an internationally recognized forum for the promotion of safety training, practice and performance among internal company staff, in the surrounding communities and in associated services, where risk of injury can be raised by visitors unfamiliar with, or in noncompliance of facility safety procedures.
“ On any given work day approximately 95,000 people pass through our port facilities and APM Terminals has strengthened our efforts to spread effective Safety Culture both internally and externally ” said Mr. Fejfer.
The need to include outside personnel who are exposed to, or cause risk at company facilities led to the decision to rededicate and enlarge the safety efforts for 2011 and beyond. CEO Kim Fejfer declares that safety must be considered a top priority for any company with complicated and potentially dangerous logistics operations involving people, heavy machinery and cargo.
“ When safety performance is enhanced everybody wins throughout the industry and the communities in which we live and work ” noted Mr. Fejfer.
