The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, awarded four contracts for work on placement areas in the district.

• American West Construction LLC, a service-disabled veteran-owned small business, was awarded a contract in the amount of $345,982 to perform dewatering in Placement Area No. 6, Cedar Bayou, Texas.

• Babcock Construction Company, a service-disabled veteran-owned small business, was awarded a contract in the amount of $1,618,540 to perform dewatering of Placement Area No. 5 and 6 relating to the Texas City Ship Channel.

• Bailey CKY JV, a service-disabled veteran-owned small business, was awarded a contract in the amount of $518,101 for draining and dewatering Placement Area No. 23, relating to the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, Texas, Channel to Harlingen in Cameron County, Texas.

• Kimrick Performance Group, LLC, an 8(a) small business, was awarded a contract in the amount of $2,118,920 for the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, Texas, Channel to Victoria, Placement Area No. 1 in Calhoun County, Texas. Work will consist of raising levees at the project site.

According to Alicia Rea, a project operations manager with USACE Galveston District, dewatering allows for the outflow of excess water and increases the placement area’s capacity to hold more material. The process is part of the district’s Disposal Area Management Practices.

USACE Galveston District was established in 1880 as the first engineer district in Texas to oversee river and harbor improvements. The district is directly responsible for maintaining more than 1,000 miles of channel, including 270 miles of deep draft and 750 miles of shallow draft as well as the Colorado River Locks and Brazos River Floodgates.
