The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, awarded a $101,607.25 contract to conduct Mississippi River maintenance dredging operations at Sunset Marina and Boat Harbor in Rock Island, Ill.
The contract was awarded to Marine Tech, LLC, of Duluth, Minn. The contractor will perform hydraulic dredging of the entrance to Sunset Marina and Boat Harbor and place the dredged material at an approved disposal site. Worked is scheduled to begin Nov. 1 and should take no more than 90 days to complete.
There are fourteen federally constructed small boat harbors and small boat access channels and one federally constructed commercial boat harbor in the Rock Island District. The small boat harbor projects were constructed for shallow draft recreational vessels with depths ranging from 5- to 7-feet. The commercial boat harbor was constructed for vessels with drafts up to 12-feet.
All small boat harbor projects have a local sponsor, usually a municipality. Assurances between the Corps and the local sponsor provide for the Corps to maintain adequate access ways, while the local sponsor provides adequate areas and retaining structures for dredged material placement. Maintenance dredging of small boat harbors is usually accomplished by contract every two to five years if funding is available.
