Savannah Maritime Commission has been supported by the Charleston Legislative Delegation upon opposing the DHEC issuing permits to dredge the Savannah River, says Rep. Chip Limehouse.
“We feel like many environmental concerns may have been overlooked with the hasty issuance of this DHEC permit ,” Limehouse said. “It is our hope that we can slow this down so that South Carolina’s precious natural resources can be safeguarded.”
DHEC’s board has already voted to approve a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to deepen the Savannah River in order to allow bigger ships to come through to the Savannah port.
However, according to the Savannah River Maritime Commission, a permit for the Savannah River dredging was improperly approved.
On November 14, the group proclaimed the Department of Health and Environmental Control’s decision null and void with no effect of law.
