The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has extended the initial 45-day comment period relating to the remediation of the Acid Brook Delta and the public hearing, because the community was not notified in time.

The new public comment period has been extended through January 13 and the public hearing has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. on January 5 at Pompton Lakes High School, said David Kluesner, EPA Spokesperson .

The Acid Brook Delta remediation is scheduled to start early next year and should take over a year to complete.

The project will include dredging of around 68,000 cubic yards of sediment from 26 acres of the lake that are contaminated primarily with mercury and lead. The dredged sediment will be sent to an authorized off-site disposal premises.

The EPA will take into consideration all important comments in order to reach a decision on whether to allow the proposed permit modification to impose remedy selection at the Acid Brook Delta study area.
