The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has decided not to put dredging spoils from the Calcasieu Ship Channel into an open water site in Big Lake.
Constant silting makes it necessary to dredge the ship channel in order to maintain a depth of 40 feet and a width of 400 feet from the Port of Lake Charles to the mouth of the river.
The Lake Charles Dock Board is pursuing efforts together with the Corps of Engineers and U.S. Rep. Charles Boustany, R-Lafayette, to secure funds to cover the costs of the work.
Bill Rase, director of the Port of Lake Charles, stated that the initial phase of the work has been finished, however restoration of Black Lake and the Sabine Refuge are perceived as long-term projects that will need additional millions prior to being accomplished.
