CHEC has awarded the contract for “Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities – Reclamation Works of Hong Kong – Zhuhai – Macao Bridge”. The awarded contract sum is HKD 6.989 billion, approximately USD 896 million. The construction period is 50 months. The project will commence by the end of November 2011 and is expected to complete in early 2016.
The Hong Kong – Zhuhai – Macao Bridge, passing across the Mainland waters of Lingdingyang of Pearl River Estuary, is a strategic highway network linking the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Zhuhai City of Guangdong Province, and Macao Special Administrative Region. The functions of the bridge are to meet the demand of passenger and freight land transport among Hong Kong, the Mainland and Macao, and to enhance the economic and sustainable development in the three places.
“Reclamation Works” is the first contract of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge within Hong Kong. Major works comprise reclamation of 150-hectare at the northeast of the Hong Kong International Airport for the construction of artificial island, which will further develop accommodations and other facilities for frontline of Government Departments. The project also includes construction of about 6,140m long seawall, which is mainly made up of 134 steel sheet pile cellular structure with diameter of 27m or 31m. To support subsequent construction of superstructures, more than 19 million m3 of backfilled materials will be used, and high-efficiency ground treatment technology, which renders soil condition achieving desired strength within a short construction period, will be applied.
This winning bid has created apparent advantages for CHEC in the whole project of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge and produced favorable influences on bidding subsequent sections of the project. Besides, it has also made CHEC more specialized in marine engineering.
