MP Larry Miller expects to learn by early next week more about his Conservative government’s decision on his request for the feds to dredge the federally owned Owen Sound Harbour.
The federal member for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound insists on a maintenance dredge.
No dredging has been conducted for at least 25 years.
“But that doesn’t take away from the fact that it needs to be done and I’m going to keep pushing for it, ” he said.
According to Miller the dredging will be more costly now because the silt under the water is contaminated. However, he wants the undertaking to be completed the following year.
Miller’s request has been supported by both the city and Grey County.
Deposits of silt are causing ships to come into and leave the harbor with lighter loads. Parrish and Heimbecker, the company that owns the Owen Sound grain elevators, has said that there is a great possibility that shipping operations will cease in two to three years unless the harbor is dredged.
