Phillip Goldfeder, Assembly member, is demanding a public hearing on the projected maintenance dredging in the East Rockaway Inlet. Key stakeholders, residents, local businesses and community organizations would be involved in the public hearing.
Goldfeder stated that following the damages caused by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee, new sand on the beaches is a greatly welcomed news story.
The project is aimed at removing 240,000 cubic yards of sand from the East Rockaway Inlet. The displaced sand would be transported to the Rockaway Beach shoreline. It is anticipated that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would be in charge of the project implementation.
Goldfeder stressed that the new sand would only serve as a temporary solution. This is the reason why he keeps insisting on the Army Corps of Engineers to inspect the option of installing rock jetties.
