Enormous land reclamation has commenced in the sea off the Dadeng Island coast to make preparation for the construction of Xiamen Xiang’an International Airport.
Yang Hui, street party secretary of the Work Committee, said that the shoaly land off the Dadeng Island coast will be transformed into land in the upcoming few years. He added that Xiang’an International Airport will be built on the reclaimed land.
The construction of Xiang’an International Airport is planned to commence in 2014 with trial operations running in the first half of 2019.
Xiang’an International Airport will have a total of four 3,600-meter-long runways, which will enable it to accommodate 177 passenger planes including the Airbus A380 and 28 cargo aircrafts.
The first phase of the airport construction is intended to fulfill the requirements of 45 million passenger capacity by 2025. The annual passenger capacity is expected to reach 75 million in 2040, following completion of the second phase.
The airport is expected to become a regional aviation hub able to meet the air transport demands in Xiamen, Zhangzhou, Quanzhou, Longyan, Kinmen, including the eastern Guangdong and southern Jiangxi region.
