Short and long-term plans for preventing any further and extensive flooding have already been drafted by the Thailand’s Strategic Committee for Reconstruction and Future Development (SCRF).
The committee chairman Virabongsa Ramangkura said at the Thai Chamber of Commerce, that the committee has assured investors, other countries’ leaders and the Thai people that in the upcoming period of at least one year, no floods could be expected in Thailand.
According to the plans, issues of high importance need to be immediately dealt with.
These are dredging canals, improving all sluice gates to meet international standards and to conduct flood prevention drills twice a year including post-drill evaluations.
Mr Virabongsa added that more high-capacity water pumps are necessary and that a computer controlled system is required to control the regulation of sluice gate openings.
In order to improve efficiency of sluice gates and to avoid illegal utilization of land the government is expected to enforce the existing laws.
