The Keystone Harbor area has been dredged for nights in order to enable state ferries to safely navigate.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is providing $806,000 to Tacoma’s American Construction Company to displace 30,000-to-50,000 cubic yards of sediment from the harbor.
Approximately 900 and 1,100 cubic yards of sediment is being removed each night depending on external circumstances.
The sediment is being used to replenish the beach parts that have been eroding in recent years.
According to Marta Coursey, spokeswoman for Washington State Ferries, high-speed cross winds, tidal conditions and shallow depths keep affecting sailings on a regular basis.
