The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Seattle District sent a flood fight team to the Quillayute River to stop an imminent breach at the South Jetty in La Push, Wash.
Quileute Nation officials requested assistance and a five-person team deployed to the area Jan. 7. They began shoring up an eroded beach area caused by unusually high Pacific Ocean tides and swells. Dredged material stockpiled in the area was placed on a beach south of the jetty.
District officials activated its Emergency Operations Center to assist the team and monitor the especially high tides and southwesterly swells.
The Corps team will remain in place until the tide cycle ends.
