The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District began placing dredged material from the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway Causeway to Bastrop dredging project on Placement Area 62, Jan. 17, following completion of work at the Greens Lake beneficial use site.
“Approximately 65,000 cubic yards of material will be placed along the narrowest portions of the banks of the federally-authorized placement area ,” said Alicia Rea, a project operations manager with USACE Galveston. “ Pumping of dredged material on PA62 will continue for approximately six days.”
According to Rea, the USACE Galveston District considers environmental and economical needs in every project.
“We have been coordinating closely with our partners to identify alternate methods of disposal while working within our authorized limitations to complete this project, ” Rea said. “ The Corps will continue to work with partners to seek ways in which to reduce, mitigate or eliminate negative impacts with each project we undertake while being good stewards of the taxpayers’ dollars.”
According to Rea, approximately 90,000 cubic yards of material were beneficially used on private property north of the Intracoastal Waterway prior to placement at PA62.
“ Upon completion at PA62, the contactor will move to the confined PA58A, ” said Rea. “The Corps will continue to work within the scope of its authority to complete this project.”
