Arbroath Harbour has announced tender for 3 year contract for maintenence dredging works.
Arbroath harbour is located at the mouth of the Brothock Burn, Angus at 56° 33’N 2° 35’W, 16 miles north-east of Dundee and 51 miles southeast of Aberdeen.
Usage of the harbour is presently confined to commercial fishing boats, occasional visits by cargo vessels and numerous smaller craft offering day trips to anglers and sightseers. Visits by yachts from both overseas and other UK ports are increasing. Finger pontoons have now been installed in the Inner Basin of which 50 of the 59 berths are taken up by annual berthing by leisure craft.
Although the harbour is tidal, with a mean spring range of about 4.3m and a neap range of about 2.3m, new harbour gates were installed in May 2004 at the entrance to the Inner Basin, which open and close at half tide, thus maintaining a constant 2.5m depth of water in the Inner Basin at all times.
Materials to be removed from the harbour area and navigation channel comprise of silt, sand and gravel. The loose materials have accumulated due to ongoing sediment deposition. Apart from the discharge from the Brothock Burn and local surface water drains, it is believed that there is no other source discharge in the area which could potentially contaminate the sediments.
The dredged material from each activity is to be deposited at sea approximately 1¾ nautical miles from the outer sea wall. The contractor is required to provide engineering services for the maintenance dredging of Arbroath Harbour and Harbour navigational channel.
Tender deadline is 3.2.2012.
