The Port of Los Angeles has prepared a Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the Al Larson Boat Shop Improvement Project, which proposes to modernize and upgrade the existing facility located at 1046 Seaside Avenue on Terminal Island.
The proposed project would allow Al Larson to enter a 30-year lease renewal with the Port of Los Angeles, which, in turn, would overhaul the facility, by dredging, replacing wharves and infrastructure, adding new construction, and installing a stormwater system.
Al Larson Boat Shop occupies Berth 258 at the entrance to Fish Harbor and is the oldest shipyard in Southern California. The facility serves both commercial and recreational customers, by maintaining and repairing tugboats, government and research vessels, fireboats, ferries, barges, offshore oil equipment, yachts and other types of marine equipment. The company, which celebrated its centennial in 2003, also operates Al Larson Marina in San Pedro.
The draft EIR includes a discussion of the proposed project’s environmental impacts and identifies mitigation measures to reduce these impacts as required under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), and comply with the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) and Water Discharge Requirement (WDR).
The public comment and review period is from January 20, to March 5, 2012. During this time, the Port will accept written comments and will host a public meeting on February 15, 6 p.m., at the Port of Los Angeles Administration Building, located at 425 S. Palos Verdes Street in San Pedro, to present its findings and provide opportunity for public comment.
