The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, announced recently that it will begin the Miami-Dade County Shore Protection project in Miami Beach.
The shore protection project consists of placing sand on three areas of Miami Beach using two separate sources of material. Work for the project will be conducted in two phases to avoid impacts to major special events, South Beach hotels and beach-goers during the peak of the South Florida tourism season.
During the first phase of the project, approximately 250,000 cubic-yards (cy) of sand will be dredged from an offshore borrow area and will be placed in the area from approximately 63rd Street to 69th Street. Construction activities for this phase will begin in mid-February, and is anticipated to be completed by April 2012.
The second phase of the project will utilize a sand back-passing method to bring approximately 107,000 cy sand from an accreted portion of the beach between 10th Street and 18th Street to the highly eroded areas in the vicinity of 27th Street (50,000 cy) and 44th Street (57,000 cy). This phase of the project will begin in May 2012 with completion scheduled for November 2012.
All segments of the beach will have secured work zones to minimize the range of the project and for public safety. The public is urged to use caution in these areas while work is underway. All construction activities and barriers will be clearly marked.
