Gladstone Ports Corporation’s (GPC) Western Basin Dredging and Disposal Project is set to become safer with the introduction of Incident Cause Analysis Method (ICAM) training.

Western Basin Dredging and Disposal Project Leader Peter O’Sullivan said ICAM has been put in place to train supervisors and safety personal to create a safer working environment.

“It’s to ensure everyone understands the basics of constructive incident reporting which creates better hazard identification and proactive prevention on our worksites, ” Mr O’Sullivan said.

“This process has been included in the safety management plan for the project with dredging contractors VODI (Van Oord Australia and Dredging International) the first to implement the safety initiative on site.”

VODI Project Director Hedwig Vanlishout said the dredging company decided to do the training because they wanted all their safety superintendents to be able to lead investigations when there is an incident.

“ It will contribute a lot to putting the ownership with supervision and it will improve leadership of our supervisors, ” Mr Vanlishout said.

“We have two levels of training. The first level is at a basic level for the supervisors and an advance level for our safety advisors.

“They learn how to look for the root causes of why an incident happened, how it can be prevented, and what we can do to avoid reoccurrence.”
