St. Augustine Beach Mayor, S. Gary Snodgrass, has expressed his happiness about the beach renourishment project scheduled to begin on Friday, should the weather conditions allow it, reports The St. Augustine Record.
As part of the third cycle of a 50-year project, approximately 2.1 million cubic yards of sand will be added to a stretch of the St. Johns County coastline that extends from the southern tip of Anastasia State Park to B Street in St. Augustine Beach.
The dredge barge has already arrived and is moored in the channel near the inlet, by Porpoise Point. It will be utilized for sucking sand and sending it through 4,000 feet of pipe to the location where the renourishment will begin.
According to St. Johns County Public Works Department assistant engineer, Andrew Ames, the “mobilization stage” comprising the laying of pipes and other preliminary work is almost complete. He has also stated that this project is planned to last until the end of June and will likely cause “minimal disruption” for beachgoers.
