The low-level radioactive waste cleanup of Port Hope will result in a temporary closure of the Port Hope Harbour, reports Northumberland TODAY.

In her statement, Alexandra Mahabir , communications co-ordinator of the Port Hope Area Initiative Management Office’s Property Value Protection Program said:

“The Port Hope Harbour remediation is part of the Port Hope Area Initiative cleanup sequence, which began with the building of the access road last fall and will continue with the construction of enabling infrastructure such as the waste water treatment plant and the new long-term waste management facility (LTWMF), ” she stated.

“ The harbour remediation cannot begin until the LTWMF is able to receive off-site waste and until the area surrounding the harbour – including the centre pier – has been prepared to accommodate the dredging. Currently, work on the harbour remediation is scheduled to begin in 2015.”

Cobourg has already made a plan to develop the west beach and this whole situation might contribute to the expansion plan advancement. Upon finalizing the Port Hope Harbour cleanup, the proposed redevelopment plans can be initiated.
