The Welt reports that the controversial deepening of the Elbe river will be significantly more expensive than it was previously planned.

Instead of 137.6 million, the officials have to spend 175.1 million euros for the channel adjustments.

The figures are based on the new economic plan, which the Hamburg Port Authority is committed to defining at the end of March.

“According to an estimated cost, we need to make an adjustment to the market conditions, to adjust transportation costs for the dredging expenses as well as the personal contribution to the project, ” Said HPA CEO Wolfgang Hurtienne.

Other issues, such as additional protective measures for the endangered plant, hemlock water dropwort and compensation payments for the fruit growers in the Old Country, are not yet included.
