The Hampton River dredging project has been completed, reports Daily Press.

A contractor Hodges and Hodges Enterprises completed the job for less than $1 million, although the city feared it would cost $2.5 million. The dredging was conducted north of the Booker T. Washington Memorial Bridge to Bromley Drive, incorporating 415 properties and 190 private piers fronting the river. Over 35,000 cubic feet of silt and sediment were removed from the river and its ancillary channels ever since the project began in October 2010.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is in charge of dredging the water to the south and west of Fort Monroe and from the mouth of the Hampton River to the downtown bridge.

Dredging the Salt Ponds and other proposed projects, which are aimed at reducing the amount of storm water and materials deposited in the city’s waterways, will be discussed this spring during the budget process.
