Hawaii News Now reports that a $2.2 million Waikiki sand replenishment project hit a major snag after a mechanical sand blower turned out to be too slow to finish the project on time.

Initial plans called for the pumping of sand from underwater reserves into a holding area on the beach.

The blower, however, does not have the necessary power to get the job done, and the contractors are resorting to Plan B.

Thus, contractor Healy Tibbetts will use heavy trucks to distribute 24,000 cubic yards of sand along Kuhio Beach between the Duke Kahanamoku Statue and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.

The trucks will drive along the beach itself with sand to the section needing to be widened. This project is a joint venture between the state DLNR, the Hawaii Tourism Authority and Kyo-Ya Hotels and Resorts.
