Residents and business owners in the Jug Creek system eagerly want the county to dredge the inlet between Jug Creek and Charlotte Harbor, reports News Press. This inlet is currently suitable only for movement of shallow-draft boats due to a considerable amount of sand that has accumulated over past few years.

Lee County has identified Shell Cut together with 48 navigation channels as a priority for maintenance. It is main access to the county’s Lavender’s Landing boat ramp and is of great importance for commercial interests in Bokeelia.

Dredging activities on the channel will be conducted in groups. The first group comprising eight channels will start at Punta Rassa and the lower Caloosahatchee River.

Contracts have been awarded only for the first project, Caloosa Isle Marina, which will cost $69,500 and it is expected to start next week.

The projects will be financed by Lee County and the West Coast Inland Navigation District.
