The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is planning to begin a Holden Beach replenishment project, free of charge and compliments of the federal government, reports StarNews Online.
Sand from an area two to three miles offshore of Oak Island will be dredged and placed on Holden Beach which has been devoted to replenishing its beachfront by annually footing the bill to replace sand that washes to sea.
According to the application, approximately 1.3 million cubic yards of sand will be removed from 509 acres of ocean bottom and placed onto 38 acres of dry beach.
This will contribute to maintaining the island’s restored protective and recreational beachfront and natural dune system.
