The NSW Government today announced $891,100 in funding to assist local councils to plan for and reduce the impacts of coastal hazards and erosion.
Minister for the Environment Robyn Parker said the funds were allocated under the second round of the 2011-2012 Coastal Management Program.
“An additional 16 projects have been allocated funds to help councils plan for the future and carry out on ground works to help manage and protect the State’s coasts, ” Ms Parker said.
“Most of these grants are for projects in areas where properties and infrastructure are currently subject to high or extreme coastal erosion risk.
“The grants are additional to the $594,000 allocated for 16 projects under the first round of the 2011-2012 Coastal Management Program.
“The Coastal Management Program aims to protect and enhance our priceless beaches, headlands and foreshores.
“It assists councils in making sound decisions about coastal development and infrastructure aimed at reducing the potential impacts of coastal hazards such as beach erosion and climate change.”
The NSW Government’s contribution will be matched by local government.
“Protecting and enhancing the NSW environment is a task for everyone – governments at all levels as well as the community, ” Ms Parker said.
“ The NSW Government recognises the need to support local government to protect the valuable coasts of NSW.”
