Kenya Ports Authority has been facing overwhelming cargo arrivals since the end of last year, reports allAfrica.

KPA managing director Gichiri Ndua explained that the whole situation was caused by increased imports for South Sudan.

Importers and other port users however complained that inefficiency in cargo handling resulted in this excessive cargo accumulation.

Ndua said that “ measures to increase the capacity are in place .” He is considerably optimistic that the recently launched Rapid Response Initiative by the Transport ministry and port capacity expansion will contribute to decongesting the East and Central Africa’s main port.

“ The current dredging of the bath numbers 18 and 19 will create ample space and ease container off take ,” he added.
