The $18 million renourishment project, which comprises various parts of the barrier island west of Bradenton, is scheduled to begin in 2015, said Charlie Hunsicker, the county’s natural resources director, according to Bradenton Herald.

State documents say that state, federal and local sources are expected to provide the needed money.

The allocation would go toward the $1 million cost of designing the Anna Maria Island renourishment project, stated Hunsicker.

The department has received funding requests for 55 beach restoration and nourishment projects. State officials have evaluated and ranked them in priority order and according to Jennifer Diaz, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Environmental Protection “ the Anna Maria Island project is the number one local government project on the list .”

She added that the proposed plans incorporate restoration of approximately 1.3 miles of shoreline and beach renourishment of approximately 7.1 miles.
