Ngai Te Rangi iwi has decided not to file a notice of appeal after a decision was rendered to allow the Port of Tauranga to dredge Tauranga harbor, reports Radio New Zealand News.
An elder, Hauata Palmer, stated that the iwi has decided not to initiate another appeal to the High Court as it would not serve any useful purpose, adding that the iwi has been through a hearing process twice and lost.
Mr Palmer also stressed that Ngai Te Rangi is still against any dredging of the harbor.
The port company is planning to deepen the harbor in the Bay of Plenty to a maximum of 17.4 meters and also to widen it in order to provide access for bigger container ships.
