The Port of Ngqura in the Eastern Cape, is set to become Africa’s premier trans-shipment hub, linking the world’s east and west trade routes, said President Jacob Zuma.
“The development of this port is not a once-off local event, it reflects the long-term vision and economic plan of the government of South Africa, ” Zuma said. “ The port is a key infrastructure project, given its location and potential, and its launch is another step forward on a journey of economic development and transformation.”
Zuma was speaking at Ngqura’s official opening on 16 March. Although it’s been operating since October 2009, the port has already exceeded its operational targets fourfold.
The launch of the Port of Ngqura takes place just a week after the President officially opened the Dube Trade Port in Durban.
Both projects were outlined in the State of the Nation Address in which the President unveiled a major infrastructure development programme which he personally leads through the Presidential Infrastructure Coordination Commission.
The Port has been in construction for the last 12 years and has been integrated with the planning of the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) for efficiency and the resulting economic benefit to businesses located in the area. It is of major strategic importance for the country and the global maritime industry.
