A dredging permit application for the former Sappi paper mill site has been withdrawn from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, reports mlive.com.

State officials stated that Melching Inc., an environmental consultant, has notified the state that the permit to dredge a 2,000-foot section of the paper mill property on Muskegon Lake and remove 50,000 cubic yards of lake-bottom material is not being sought at this time.

According to Luis Saldivia, DEQ Water Resources Division Grand Rapids office supervisor, the DEQ public hearing on the property owner’s request will be held on March 29, at Muskegon City Hall.

Property owner Doug Melching said to The Chronicle that his company will keep pursuing plans for the development of a maritime-based business park adding that he expects the dredging permit to be rewritten and resubmitted.
