The capital dredging works on deepening the Paradip Port’s channels that were launched in 2008, but suspended later on in need of higher capacity dredgers, have been continued this Sunday, IBNLive reports.
Namely, due to the failure of the principally engaged cutter and suction dredger of the Dredging Corporation of India, CSD Aquarius, to meet the dredging requirements there was a need for procurement of new dredging equipment to finish the job. Out of this reason and the fact that considerable time has passed the dredging costs from initial price have skyrocketed.
According to the Port Chairman “ the entrance channel will be deepened from 17.1 metres to 19 metres. By deepening the approach and entrance channels, Paradip Port will be in a position to handle cape size vessels of 1,25,000 DWT capacity by June. ”
Based on the estimates the overall scope of the dredging works will equal to 15 million cubic metres of dredging, which should be completed in three months.
By putting into operation dredger Back Hoe-I, the Dredging Corporation of India, signatory of Rs 253.36-crore worth dredging contract, marked the beginning of works.
