Ilo-Awela River needs dredging to prevent the river from over flowing its banks whenever it rains, according to the citizens of Ilo-Ajegunle community in Ojokoro Local Council Development Area of Lagos State.

The leaders of the Ilo-Ajegunle Community Development Association met last week with Mr Tunji Bello, the Commissioner of Environment, who appointed the Permanent Secretary responsible for their demands, reports Nigerian Tribune.

The leaders state that the river needs to be dredged to have the capacity to hold the volume of water during the rain periods. The work on the river is expected to start soon as the state government has obtained a dredging machine.

Prince Kunle Agbede , a community leader, said: “ We appeal to the state government to come to our aid now, because the situation may be worse by the time rains being, about two months time .“

He also said: „ We lost one person about three weeks ago when the river over flowed its bank. We must act very fast to prevent a repeat of that. ”
