Folly Beach, also known as “The Edge Of America” is in need of renourishment.
According to abcnews4.com, toward the initial environmental engineering work $400,000 was approved for the project, but Folly Beach still needs another $15 million so the work on developing the construction fund could start.
“Construction funds actually puts dirt on the beach, mobilizes the dredges, and puts the sand on the beach after engineering and environmental work is done, ” stated Mayor Goodwin of Folly Beach.
The erosion of the beach had reached a trigger point early last year, according to the army corps of engineers, who urged Goodwin to apply for funds. Hurricane Irene, which hit this area in August last year, made the erosion even worse.
“Our erosion factor was triggered before that storm came by in January, February of last year. That is when the corps came to us, because they monitor it all year long, ” said Goodwin.
Goodwin recently went to Washington, D.C. for the second time to talk about the neccesary renourishment fund for 2013. with South Carolina lawmakers. It is still not certain when they will get the reply about the fund.
