After its arrival at Grand Lake St. Marys, the new dredger Brutus was given the task of removing toxic algae.
The dredger will remove the contaminated materials from the bottom of the lake. This will be an enormous step in preventing toxic alge in this area, according to wdtn.com.
Dredge Supervisor, Tom Graybow said: “ Our major problem is phosphorus stuff. We can remove it that’s less we have in our lake. The life span of this machine if we look at past machines, another got 50 years so we hope to get 40 to 50 years out of this equipment”.
Brutus was manufactured by Ellicott Dredges in Baltimore, Maryland at an approximate cost of $670,000. It is a 12″ suction dredge, with a total weight of 57 tons, which will replace a dredger that is more than 40 years old.
