Dredging projects in the St. Augustine Marina will continue throught mid-April. The approximately $300,000 dredging work is already showing great results.

Dredging is the first phase of the $2.5 million project to dredge and create a breakwater at the marina, reports The St. Augustine Record. A single dredger works about 10 hours a day, five days a week, depending on the tide.

12,000 cubic yards are being removed from an area that runs from the north side of the marina almost to the Bridge of Lions and from the north of Santa Maria Restaurant south to several feet from the seawall.

City Harbormaster, Sam R. Adukiewicz , said: “ We see a difference already. We were so silted in before that we were having to put smaller boats in bigger slips. If you are running a marina, you don’t want to do that”

The excavated sand will be sent to the lighthouse boat ramp, where it will be loaded onto dump trucks and taken to an EPA-approved site.

The cost of the project was half covered by the city and the other half is financed from the Florida Inland Navigation District grant.
