$60 million worth of projects will be performed in and around the Cape Fear waterways during this year.
For the beach towns in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender Counties beach renourishment and dredging are crucial to both the local and regional economy.
Holden Beach Mayor Alan Holden said: “ Now our inlet is in such bad shape that we don’t even have markings. The Coast Guard can’t even come in to rescue someone, because we don’t know where the channel is it’s so shallow.”
Spending money from the federal funds on waterway projects is about needed works to save tourism and keep more than 10,000 jobs in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender Counties, in order to improve the economy, WWAY3 reports.
Rep. Mike McIntyre said: “ These projects are not local pork barrel projects in the old traditional sense. These are projects of regional and national significance.”
The Army Corps of Engineers says it plans on doing $60 million worth of projects in these waterways in 2012. Included in these works will be several beach renourishment projects.
