The first new marine terminal in 50 years on the Delaware will open late next year. About $70 million has already been spent to clear the site, construct a retaining wall on the shoreline, and haul and place 300,000 cubic yards of soil to raise the elevation of the 190-acre site.
Dredging at Paulsboro Marine Terminal will deepen the area to 40 feet to accommodate ships. Thousands of cubic yards of sediment have been dredged up until now.
New Jersey is providing $200 million for the construction works. The bids to build the wharf will be advertised in May. $65 million worth of construction and equipment-supply contracts will be executed in the next year.
For Gloucester County, this is the largest economic development project. The port will provide about 2,500 jobs.
According to Philly.com, the terminal will work with ships carrying break-bulk cargoes.
The final approvals for the wharf are completed, and the building can commence.
