The presidential decree allowing the Kalibaru port project to commence has been issued by the government of Indonesia.

The US$19-billion project will be executed by the port operator Pelindo II.

After the government limited the bidding process and excluded the private developers, the state-owned port operator was given the project.

Works on the port will widen the sea lane to twice its size, from 150 meters to 300 meters.

Following its completion, the port will be home to eight terminals, six of which will be container, and three fuel berths. The estimated traffic capacity of the port is 10.5 million 20-footequivalent units (TEUs) per year.

According to portcalls.com, the Kalibaru port will be a major support for the Tanjung Priok port, which is already exceeding its capacity of 5 million TEUs a year.

It is expected that the Kalibaru project will increase the capacity of existing ports in the country to prevent clogging in 2014.
