The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District, awarded a contract to Manson Construction Co., in the amount of $3,234,150 for maintenance dredging of the Sabine Pass Outer Bar and Bank Channel, Texas.

Hopper dredge BAYPORT will remove approximately 2.6 million cubic yards of sediment from the Sabine-Neches Waterway Entrance Channel beginning in mid May and is scheduled to be completed within 90 days.

“ The Sabine Neches Waterway serves as an irreplaceable link in our nation’s energy and military transportation network ,” said Deputy Chief Christopher Frabotta, USACE Galveston’s Operations Division . “ The waterway not only links to an extensive pipeline system that supplies fuel to communities and businesses across the country, it supports more than 100,000 permanent jobs and pumps billions of dollars into the economy each year to stimulate economic development in Texas .”

According to Frabotta, the USACE Galveston District partnered with the Sabine Neches Navigation District to maintain the waterways and facilitate and sustain commerce in the ship channel for Southeast Texas and the nation. The Sabine Neches Waterway provides deep water navigation from the Gulf of Mexico to various port facilities including the Port of Port Beaumont (ranked 4th in domestic and foreign tonnage), the Port of Port Arthur (ranked 25th in domestic and foreign tonnage), and the Port of Port Orange.

The USACE Galveston District was established in 1880 as the first engineer district in Texas to oversee river and harbor improvements. The district is directly responsible for maintaining more than 1,000 miles of channel, including 270 miles of deep draft and 750 miles of shallow draft as well as the Colorado River Locks and Brazos River Floodgates.
