U.S. Rep. Patrick Meehan (PA-07) announced $29.4 million in federal funding for the Delaware River Main Shipping Channel project has been included in the Energy and Water Appropriations Act for fiscal year 2013.
“ After years of needless delays, today the House of Representatives takes an important step toward funding for this project ,” said Meehan. “ This is great news for our entire region. The deepening of the Delaware River is essential to Pennsylvania’s economic strength and job creation. That’s why I made this a top priority of mine. I’ve worked to ensure this project moves forward so that the Port of Philadelphia remains a key transportation and economic connection to the world .”
Meehan has been a leader in the fight to deepen the Delaware River on behalf of the region. Meehan has personally appealed to Republican Committee leaders on behalf of the project. Meehan also wrote to senior House appropriators and House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan(WI-01) urging support for the project, citing the economic growth and sustainable job creation that it will bring to the region.Last month, Meehan met with senior officials from the Philadelphia District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to discuss the status of the Delaware River Main Shipping Channel project.
