According to BN Americas, the Spanish company Acciona is eyeing a potential project to expand Mexico’s port of Veracruz.

Guillermo Jiménez, the Acciona Mexico director , said: “ We’re very interested in the potential expansion of Veracruz port. It’s a very important project.”

The proposed US$3.04bn initiative entails expanding the northern area of the port by 500ha into the Vergara bay. An additional 32 docks would be built, as well as specialized terminals for containers, cars and bulk cargo.

Acciona built a dry dock at Veracruz in the 1980s but did not participate in port works again until it kicked off its project at Salina Cruz port in August 2011.

“We’re interested in the port sector and are on the lookout for potential projects, ” Jiménez said.

The Salina Cruz project involves expanding the entrance to the port in Oaxaca state at a cost of 246mn pesos, and includes building a 165m dock and dredging the access channel to allow larger vessels.
