According to sunherald.com, the Members of the Corps of Engineers Mobile District and the Jackson County Port Authority will hold a public hearing Thursday on the environmental aspects of a plan to widen the ship channel from Bayou Casotte to Horn Island.
The governing agencies will take public comment on the project that Port Director Mark McAndrews said is necessary to accommodate larger ships coming into Bayou Casotte.
The plan is to dredge 7.2 miles of what is called the lower Pascagoula Sound from Horn Island to the turning basin in Bayou Casotte, widening it from 350 feet to 450 feet at a depth of 42 feet to match the existing channel.
This dredging project will produce 3.4 million cubic yards of dredged material.
“ This is to maintain safe navigation into the Bayou Casotte harbor as the ships get bigger,” McAndrews said.
