The Savannah River Maritime Commission on Tuesday recommended that dredging be limited to a depth of 45 feet, Associated Press reports.
The Army Corps of Engineers has proposed dredging to 47 feet, but the panel said that would be harmful to fish in the area. The state Supreme Court is considering whether South Carolina environmental officials had the ability to issue water permits for the dredging.
A federal judge is slated to decide whether the deepening requires a pollution permit from the state before work can begin.
