The Outer Banks Voice reports that the Hatteras Inlet ferry service continues to be hampered by shallow water, but dredging and extra runs to the mainland are planned to start by the weekend.
“ After Irene that was the only place there was any water for the ferries to run, ” said Roger Bullock , chief of the USACE navigation branch. “ We tried to develop it, but it just doesn’t seem to be the best route.”
“ We’ve mobilized side caster dredge Merritt, depending on what the winds and waves do across the sound, they will be in Hatteras by the weekend ,” Bullock said.
“ If they can, they will get some dredging done today. But definately Saturday at 6 o’clock in the morning they will head out and start working.”
Earlier this week, the U.S. Coast Guard issued an advisory, urging mariners not to pass other vessels in the vicinity of buoys 11A and 12C.
