David Small, the deputy secretary of the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, said there isn’t any money in the budget for dredging of smaller inland bay waterways.
A Delaware official says that because of attrition of staff and equipment, the state’s ability to perform the work has also decreased.
According to The Republic, local representatives met with DNREC officials this month about the issue. Rep. John Adkins says he would like to see a permanent funding source so mud flats and sand bars don’t emerge at low tide.
The lawmaker says boating is declining because boat owners can’t get in and out at low tide and boat slips are a significant revenue source for Millsboro.
Adkins says many restaurants also serve patrons who arrive by boat.
