A private contractor hired by the Army Corps of Engineers is dredging the Holland’s harbor this week, reports wzzm13.com.
Members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers say strong storms may have caused the sand to build up earlier than usual, forcing the harbor to close last fall. Several ships carrying coal have been forced to take a detour.
“ They diverted their material to Grand Haven, then the material was trucked down to the power plant in Holland,” says official. “ Now they don’t have to do that. The ships can unload here, which will be a cost savings to the power plant — which will be a cost savings to the end user.”
The Corps expects to finish dredging the harbor by Saturday.
